KNUST Hospital Inaugurates Refurbished Theatre

Kumasi, October 15, GNA – The Kwame Nkrumah university of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital, has inaugurated a 150,000 Ghana Cedis refurbished operation theatre at a ceremony in Kumasi. The refurbishment forms part of efforts by the hospital administration to bring the theatre to standard. It is also in line with moves to qualify the hospital to be accredited to train residents and housemen. The new facility consists of two operating rooms, a recovery ward, a central anaesthesia gas system, an endoscopy unit and Internet connectivity.

Dr. Yaw Bio, Director of the KNUST Health Services, said the reconstructed surgical theatre would be manned by two consultant surgeons, obstetricians and gynaecologists as well as competent medical officers, anaesthetists and other theatre staff. He said the theatre would provide 24-hour services for both emergency and planned surgeries.

Dr Bio said the hospital had restructured the Out-patients Department (OPD) into smaller accountable units to help improve supervision of the central administration and also to reduce corrupt practices by staff. Professor Kwasi Kwafo Adarkwa, Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, urged staff of the hospital to be disciplined and abide by the hospital’s regulations to ensure the provision of quality healthcare. 16 Oct 07
