…TESCON denies claims
Kumasi, March 10, GNA – The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) branch of the Tertiary Education Students Confederacy (TESCON) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has denied claims about privatisation of the halls of residence on the university campus by government.
“There is no government policy seeking to privatise halls of residence in KNUST campus in particular and for that matter the other public universities in general,” the group said in a statement signed by its President, Mr Owusu Adjabeng.
It advised the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) which it accused of making the false claim to stop “throwing dust into the eyes of the public”.
“We believe it is high time the NDC put a stop to such politics of falsehood and buttressed all their allegations with concrete evidence”. The group also commented on the recent fuel price hikes and said they were of the view that subsidies on petroleum products should be a thing of the past.
Such subsidies should rather go into education and health, which are fundamental to the growth of the country.
The statement expressed surprise about the NDC’s reaction to the new prices, saying, it was hypocritical for the very party that demanded that the NPP government should increase petroleum prices during the last elections to call people onto the streets over what it has itself asked for.
It welcomed the budget presented to Parliament by the government and said it contained cushion effects against the petroleum price increases.
