Kumasi, Oct 10, GNA – Mr Fosuaba Mensah Banahene, Chief Administrator of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), on Thursday cut the sod for work to commence on 30.6 billion cedis projects at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi. They work included the putting up of a permanent building for the College of Art, a new central auditorium, new lecture theatre for the School of engineering and permanent building for the College of Science. Mr Banahene said the fund had also released 188 billion cedis to support tertiary institutions to improve upon facilities to raise the standard of education.
He said a further 90 billion cedis had also been released to pre-tertiary institutions.
The GETFund Administrator therefore asked the authorities of the University to ensure strict supervision for contractors working on the projects to do a good work.
Professor Kwesi Andam, Vice Chancellor of KNUST, noted that the University had not seen this level of infrastructure development for more than 40 years.
The GETFund, he said, must therefore be seen as a potential tool for rescuing Ghana’s education from decline adding, “What we are witnessing here this morning is only the beginning of a rescue operation”.
Prof Andam said: “we have to initiate backlog of infrastructure projects that should have been put in place some 50 years ago”.
