KNUST declares war on taxi drivers

Kumasi, July 30, GNA – The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is to step up security by monitoring the activities of taxi drivers who ply the campus to curb crime on the campus. Professor Kwesi Andam, the Vice-Chancellor, said the move had become necessary in view of the snatching of mobile phones, sexual harassment and robbery that had increased on the campus in recent times for which taxi drivers have been blamed.

“We are gearing up to deal with these elements in order to allow students, lecturers and other staff of the university to carry out their academic duties without fear or intimidation”. Prof Andam was speaking at a passing-out parade for about 60 security recruits after six weeks’ training at the university in Kumasi on Friday.

The recruits, 50 men and 10 women, were taught foot patrols, handling of exhibits, foot drills, fore prevention, human relations, report writing and endurance. They were presented with certificates. The Vice-Chancellor cautioned them to exhibit a high sense of discipline and not to connive with criminals, saying, “We shall be ruthless with those who will misconduct themselves”. He commended the Fourth Battalion of Infantry (4BN) for the assistance in training the recruits.

Philip Aggrey and Faustina Coduah were adjudged the best recruits in physical training and drill.
