KNUST confers Doctorate degrees on two

Accra, Dec. 7, GNA – The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology on Saturday conferred honorary Doctor of Science degrees on two distinguished dons for their dedicated and selfless service to society and the university community.

The awards were handed over to Dr Emmanuel Evans-Anfom, former Vice-Chancellor of the University and Professor Eldryd Hugh Owen Parry, a professor of Medicine and the second dean of the new School of Medical Sciences at a special congregation and Alumni Dinner in Accra.

The awards bring to 46 the number of honorary degrees that the University had conferred on distinguished personalities in its 50-year history. It is also the first time that a congregation had been held outside the University Campus in Kumasi.

Professor Kwesi Andam, Vice-Chancellor of the KNUST said the change in venue and time for the congregation was an indication of how the University was prepared to adapt to changes.

He urged the University alumni to create awareness among members to endow the University in a positive manner.

Professor Andam said the university was working hard to expand intake in line with infrastructure development to ease admission conscriptions.

The University authorities, he said, had also accepted recommendations of a feasibility study into restructuring of the current eleven faculties into six colleges to allow for greater efficiency.

Prof Andam said efforts would be made in the next three months to complete the statutes review to provide legal backing to the restructuring exercise. Dr Evans-Anfom said history would be the best judge of his contribution towards the building of the University.

He lauded the contributions that former students were making in every sphere of national development and expressed the hope that the trend would continue.

Dr Kwame Saraah Mensah, President of the Alumni Association, said the country needed to pay attention to human resource development, adding that, as a first step to achieving the goal was to improve the condition of service of University lecturers.

He pledged the assistance of the Alumni in the development of the University.
