KMA votes for new presiding member today

All things being equal, the election of the presiding member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) will be held later today, September 27, 2016 for the fifth consecutive time.

The local poll has hit a snag on several occasion as the Assembly simply fail to reach a compromise on election days.

For instance in the last poll, the election was rather rocked with confusion with Assembly members abandoning the voting process, after a free-for-all fight broke in the middle of the polls.

Both candidates, Nana Kofi Senya and Nana Adumhene failed their bid in the tight encounter, as the two were unable to reach two-thirds majority required by law.

The two contestants, Nana Kofi Senya – perceived to be the New Patriotic Party (NPP) choice and Nana Adumhene, reportedly the National Democratic Congress (NDC) favorite failed to secure the two-thirds majority votes required by the law.

At the end of voting, Nana Kofi Senya secured 68 votes as against his contender, Nana Adumhene who garnered 66 votes.

But the officials supervising today’s polls in the Assembly said all preparations have been done and are hopeful for a successful elections.

The KMA has 147 members, 91 of them elected, 44 appointed and 10 ex-officio members, who are Members of Parliament (MPs).
