Kumasi, Dec 20, GNA – Mr James Yaw Oppong, Ashanti Regional Vice-Chairman of the Association of Building and Civil Contractors of Ghana (ABCCG), on Tuesday reiterated the call on the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to take concrete steps to halt further encroachment on school lands by private estate developers.
He has appealed to the assembly to take a serious view of the recent concerns raised by Otumfuo Osei Tutu 11, the Asantehene, about encroachment on school lands in the metropolis and device measures to prevent people from taking over school lands.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Oppong commended the Asantehene for showing concern about the problem and appealed to him to put pressure on the KMA to initiate measures that would help prevent people from further encroachment on school lands. Mr Oppong said the rampant encroachments were depriving the affected schools of expansion and development of new infrastructure to promote quality education.
He cited the encroachment on a piece of land earmarked for a junior secondary school block for Fankyenebra, a suburb of Kumasi, by private developers, causing agitation among the people in the community. Mr Oppong, who is a citizen of the town, said if the situation was not halted immediately the people could resort to any other means to retrieve the land. 20 Dec 05
