The Kumasi Metropolis Assembly says it will soon introduce spot fines to discipline residents who will violate sanitation by-laws and litter around.
The Kumasi Mayor, Hon Osei Assibey Antwi, who disclosed this said the Assembly has given a month’s grace period to some 150 sanitation crusaders who were chosen from the national service personnel posted to the Assembly to intensify public education on sanitation in the city, and after that, the spot fines will take effect.
Speaking at a training workshop organised by the Assembly for the 150 sanitation crusaders on Thursday, October 12, 2017 he said they will be engaging churches, mosques, market places and community radios to reach out to the people within the metropolis to educate them for one month on the need to keep the city clean.
Mr Assibey said during the one month education period, the spot fines and sanctions will not be applied, “but after the one month has elapsed, we will start the spot fines and sanctions”.
He said: “After the one month grace period, when they are going, they will go with spot fine receipt book. It will be with them, so when you are disposing waste and you did not dispose it well, they will charge you.”
The Kumasi Mayor noted that sanitation has been the main problem confronting the city and Ghana as a whole, and therefore, indicated that the Assembly is resolute to make sure the city is clean.
He, therefore, urged the citizenry to make sanitation a priority by making sure that they do not leave waste generated by them, but make sure they are cleaned since it is the responsibility of every citizen to make the nation clean.
He also called on the media to use their medium to champion the sanitation course to help make the city clean.
