KMA steps up revenue mobilization drive

Kumasi, Sept. 11, GNA – The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has stepped up efforts at achieving its internally generated revenue target of GH¢10,352,705.29 for the year.

Mr Moses Kyei, Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization Sub-Committee of the assembly, said the KMA’s Revenue Task Force has within the last month embarked on massive collection and sensitization programme to encourage businesses, entrepreneurs and residents to pay their taxes. During the relatively short period, they have bagged over GH¢100,000, he said, adding that, the task force expects to rake in about GH¢300,000 by the end of September.

Mr Kyei was speaking at a day’s workshop on revenue mobilization, organized for members of the Assembly in Kumasi. It was jointly sponsored by the Foundation for Female Photo-Journalists (FFP), a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) and the Assembly and was aimed at sensitizing the participants on the role they must play to assist in bring more revenue.

The workshop also provided the platform to discuss effective ways to streamline bottlenecks in the revenue collection system. Mr Kyei, who is the Assembly member for Patasi, identified stool lands, licenses, property and basic rates as the main sources of income to the KMA and urged the residents of the Metropolis to honour their tax obligations to help the KMA achieve its development goals. He said when the people begin to see physical development in their communities they would be motivated to pay their rates and levies to the assembly.

Miss Esenam Adu-Gyamfi, Project Coordinator of FFP, appealed to assembly members to find innovative way of generating additional revenue, outside, the traditional sources to enhance the work of the Assembly. 11 Sept. 09
