Kumasi, Sept 29, GNA- Electrical cables worth about 62 million cedis have been stolen from street lights at New Asokwa near the Kumasi Sports Stadium.
Mr Paul Boakye, Chief Electrical Superintendent of KMA, said five million cedis worth of cables have also been stolen along the Bekwai road while three million cedis worth of cables have been removed along the Pinako road.
Mr Boakye said the over one billion cedis spent so far on the repair of streetlights in the metropolis over the past year is virtually going down the drain.
He appealed to residents of the metropolis to help in protecting the streetlights.
“Security depends on the proper functioning of these street lights so if thieves are allowed to remove the cables and take them away, we are allowing our own safety to be compromised by the activities of these unscrupulous people”, he said.
Mr Michael Adusei-Bonsu, Assemblyman for Dadiesoaba where thieves have removed the cables, has expressed concern about the situation. He appealed to residents of the area to be vigilant and protect the cables.
The KMA recently rehabilitated streetlights with 250 watts bulbs but the lights are not functioning because of the activities of the cable thieves.
