Klottey Korle NPP primaries for Ga people only?

Accra, May 20, GNA – An Accra Fast Track High Court has restrained the New Patriotic Party from conducting its primaries in the Klottey Korley constituency.

This followed a motion filed by one of the parliamentary aspirants in the constituency, George Kwabena Abankwah-Yeboah, asking the court to restrain the party from disallowing him to contest the seat.

The aspirant has jointly sued the Party Chairman, Mr Peter Mac Manu, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Mr. Sammy Crabbe, the constituency chairman, Mr. Alex Antwi, Constituency executives and the NPP Greater Accra Regional Secretary.

They are to appear in court on Tuesday, May 27, 2008.

In an affidavit, Mr Abankwah-Yeboah said he was among four people who applied to contest the seat and subsequently submitted his application to the vetting committee of the party and was vetted on April 16, 2008 for the primaries which was originally scheduled for May 18, 2008.

He said the executives of the Klottey Korley constituency withdrew his application and notified him that his name had been deleted from the list of aspirants “because he is not (a) Ga”.

Mr Abankwah-Yeboah said he then sought an explanation from the National Organizer of the party, Mr Lord Commey, who told him (Abankwah-Yeboah) that, “The Ga thing is the issue”.

He said that the stance of the executives was a “serious breach of the letter and spirit of the party’s constitution” and “an infringement on his rights as a party member and Ghanaian”.

The plaintiff thus asked the court to stop the defendants from interfering with his right pending the hearing of the case on May 27.
