KITA students plant trees to protect Lake Bosomtwe

Kuntunase (Ash), June 6, GNA – Students of the Kumasi Institute of Tropical Agriculture (KITA) have planted 250 trees along the banks of Lake Bosomtwe in the Atwima Kwanwoma District.

The tree planning exercise, which formed part of activities to mark the World Environmental Day, was aimed at providing protection for the Lake from the impact of climate change.

Mr Richard Tuffour Antwi, Assistant Programme Co-ordinator of KITA, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the exercise was also undertaken since the climate change menace was affecting the lakes and rivers in the area.

He called on the youth of the community to take interest in tree planting to improve on the environment.

The Bosomtwe Atwima Kwanwoma District Chief Executive, Mr Edward Nti Berko lauded the tree planting exercise, saying it would reverse the reduction of the water level of the Lake and protect the water body for the next 50 years.

Mr Lovans Owusu-Takyi, Country Director for Youth Volunteers for the Environment, Ghana, a non-governmental organisation who supplied the tree seedlings said climate change had hit hard on the world natural resources such as water resources and it was important for the youth to plant trees to protect them.

Mr Kwame Amankwah, Head of the Management Committee of the Lake Bosomtwi Water Resources, expressed gratitude to KITA students and the youth volunteers for their initiative.
