Kids In Horse Riding, Jumping Show

Burma Camp (Greater Accra) 8 Dec., Children Abed between six and 14 yesterday, thrilled hundreds of horse enthusiasts and soldiers with an artistic display in horse riding, jumping and other competitions at Burma Camp. The “Gymkhana and Riding Show”, which involved a number of games and events, was organised by the Ghana army polo and saddle club at the premises of the three mounted squadron of the recce regiment. Major General Joseph Henry Smith, army commander who was the guest of honour said the role of the squadron in official functions “All fall in line with the ideals and aspirations of the Ghana army of today.” He said the army is trying not only to improve it image but also fostering the desired friendship, understanding, co-operation and cordial relationship between soldiers and civilians. The army commander, congratulated the squadron for the revival of the club and the show, stressing that “What has happened today is ample evidence to prove what the Ghana Army saddle and polo club has admirably set, and is equally meeting the challenges, objectives and ideals for which it was established.” Lieutenant Colonel I. B. Quartey, Officer commanding the RECCE regiment told newsmen the show was organised as part of activities to raise funds for the club. He said it was also to encourage the interest of riding among children of both service personnel and civilians, and the larger public. Soldiers of the squadron did a few events on horseback, but the children, stole the day’s show as they exhibited their prowess in the saddle in the main events. Prizes were given to winners in the various competitions which included a raffle draw.
