Accra, Jan. 11, GNA-Miss. Catherine Afeku, former Government Spokesperson on Infrastructure has called on Ghanaians to observe environmental cleanliness to enable them to remain healthy at all times. She said environmental cleanliness such as the cleaning of mosquito breeding places, choked gutters and clearing of surrounding bushes would contribute meaningfully to fight the malaria disease. Miss. Afeku who made the call at the launch of Clean-up Campaign in Accra on Sunday, said the disease, if not well checked, would deprive the country of most of her future leaders.
The exercise, which is an initiative of Kick Malaria Out of Africa, a Non-Governmental Organization championing the cause of malaria eradication in the country, begins in Accra on Saturday, January 31 and would be held on the last Saturday of every month. Non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, keep fit clubs and political parties are expected to participate in the exercise.
Mrs. Afeku, who is also an anti-malaria advocate, suggested that the World Malaria Day which falls on April 25, should be declared national Clean-up Day.
Mr Fritz Baffour, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, said the issue of malaria eradication would be one of the prime concerns of the NDC government and that everything possible would be done to support its eradication.
Mr. Wisdom Gidiso, Member of Parliament for Krachie East, praised the NGO for their initiative and expressed the hope that, other ngos and civil societies would support the programme. Mr Kwame Ampofo Twumasi, Member of Parliament for Nkoranza North, Called on all to register with the National Health Insurance Scheme to enable them to access better healthcare.
Mr. Kwabena Osei Bonsu, Chief Executive of the Kick Malaria Out, Africa expressed the hope that support would be given to the organization to enable it to achieve the avowed aim of making Africa a malaria free zone. 11 Jan. 09
