Accra, Nov 27, GNA- Former Porters at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) have appealed to the authorities at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to reinstate their services.
They said the ban on their activities had brought hardship to their families.
The porters said they had made several contributions towards the development of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). They made this known at a press conference in Accra on Saturday. Mr Samuel Adjei who spoke on behalf of the porters said they were GCAA employees who were wrongfully terminated.
He said upon the intervention of the Ombudsman in 1985, the Ministry of Mobilization and Social Welfare under the directive of the PNDC government, arranged with the GCAA to offer services through porters on contract basis.
Mr Adjei said the porters then formed a union and this had been in existence for more than 20 years.
He said the Union which had been registered with the Registrar General’s Department and that their services had been acknowledged by the GCAA.
Mr Adjei said it therefore came as a surprise to the Porters when their contract with the GCAA was terminated.
He said they had made a several appeals to the Ministries of Interior and the Castle but nothing had been heard from them. The porters therefore called on the government to intervene and bring an end to the situation.
