Accra, Feb. 22, GNA – The Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) office at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA on Thursday destroyed a consignment of unwholesome goods with an estimated value of 400 million cedis at the Oblogo refuse dump, near Weija, in Accra. The goods consisted of 125 cartons of hatching eggs, six cartons of fish, two packages of cheese and vegetables.
Dr John Niendow Karimu, Principal Veterinary Officer and Dr Francis Peterson, Regional Veterinary Officer, both in the Greater Accra Region, told journalists that the eggs were imported from Jordan where Avian (Bird) flu was detected.
They said they were therefore not taking any chances, even though it had not been confirmed that the eggs were actually infected. They said samples had been taken to the Veterinary Services Department for analysis.
Mr Thomas Addo Twum, Public Relations Officer, KIA-CEPS, said the eggs were imported from Jordan in December last year without any permit from the relevant authorities.
He said the consignment was abandoned when its owner was needed to assist CEPS in investigations.
The exercise was done in collaboration with the veterinary authorities, Accra Metropolitan Authority and the United States Agency for International Development.
