About 160 hectares of land at Keta have been reclaimed from the sea for human habitation. It forms more than 85 per cent of the Keta Sea Defence Project which began in 1999 to protect the Keta township and its environs from sea erosion.
The project will be completed in September this year, ahead of the February 2004 schedule. In addition, a 773 metre-long sea wall between the land and sea designed to last for more than 200 years has been completed. This came to light when the Works and Housing Minister, Alhaji Mustapha Idris, paid a familiarization visit to the project site.
In all, about 275.5 hectares of land is expected to be reclaimed, out of which 213 hectares would constitute land for habitation, industry and the creation of nine bird habitats as well as the promotion of eco-tourism. Also completed is an 80.5 metre-long flood control structure designed to check flooding and maintenance of the Keta lagoon at an acceptable level conducive for fishing.
The construction of an 8.3 kilometre bituminous-surfaced road between Keta and Havedzi and an 11-metre deep dredged channel from Keta to Havedzi for water transport and other fishing and tourism activities has also been completed.
