Kenyasi residents blame Newmont for cracks in their buildings

Kenyasi (B/A), Sept. 4, GNA – Some inhabitants in Kenyasi have alleged that their buildings have developed structural defects as a result of the activities of Newmont Ghana Gold Limited and have vowed to fight for their rights.

Mr. Abdulai Bin Ibrahim, Secretary of Kenyasi No. 2 Bye-Pass Landlords Association, told a meeting of the executive of Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM) as part of a three-day workshop on the validation of water analysis and sensitisation on community rights and responsibilities. He stated that most members of the association had complained about the development of deep cracks on their buildings, caused by the periodic blast of heavy rocks by Newmont Ghana Gold Limited. Mr Ibrahim said the Association on May 29 this year wrote to the company about the issue but it’s management dismissed the claims at a meeting on August 15 this year, saying it was rather an earthquake that caused the cracks.

He said members of his association and Newmont have agreed to form a committee comprising representatives of the DCE, traditional authorities, Environmental Protection Agency and also appointment an engineer who would ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the development of cracks on their buildings.

Mr. Daniel Owusu-Koranteng, Executive Director of WACAM, advised the aggrieved landlords to abide by laid down procedures in seeking a redress.

“You have the right to seek popular action by going on demonstration. However, you must remind the Police if you wish to do so”, he cautioned.
