Ken Agyapong backs Pianim’s ‘laziness’ comment

Member of Parliament for Assin Central has quizzed the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) whether the party has not benefitted from Kwame Pianim for him to be ridiculed by some party bigwigs if the party claims to be liberal.

Andrews Kwame Pianim a celebrated Ghanaian business economist and a member of the NPP was reported to have told the Africawatch magazine that the NPP needs the courage to confront the 2012 electoral defeat because “it is good for democracy and the nation”.

Mr Pianim blamed the NPP national executives for exhibiting “intellectual and mental laziness” before, during and after the 2012 general election.

Speaking on Hello FM in Kumasi over the weekend, Kennedy Agyapong expressed concern over how the party is handling the issue, since he believes the celebrated economist has every right to criticise the party he belongs to.

“If we (the NPP) say we are liberal democrats, then why must we tarnish the image of Pianim when he is expressing his views? Are we (the NPP) saying that we have never benefitted from Kwame Pianim? Let us be sincere to ourselves. What some of our members are doing is wrong”, he said.

“I (Kennedy Agyapong) still support what Kwame Pianim said because he has the right as a member to criticize the party. What is wrong with us (the NPP)?” he added.

The outspoken NPP MP cited an example of how P.C. Appiah-Ofori asked the public to grill his source of wealth when he raised issues about the ministerial vetting boycott by the minority caucus in parliament.

He was however optimistic that the NPP will win the court case and depose President John Mahama.
