Kedzi Welfare Union launches anniversary

Accra, Oct. 4, GNA – Mr Richard Lassey, Member of Parliament for Keta, has called on Ghanaians to embrace self-help spirit to initiate their own development projects to attract government’s support. He said community development initiative was very important in the lives of the people if the country was to break the cycle of poverty that had engulfed it.

Mr Lassey made the call at the launch of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Kedzi Welfare Union in Accra on Saturday. It was on the theme: “Harnessing all human and material resources to rebuild Kedzi.”

The Member of Parliament said the rebuilding of the town, which was destroyed by the Keta sea erosion should not be the sole responsibility of the government, adding that the people should take an active part in shaping the destiny of the town.

Mr Lassey urged the people to unite and avoid petty squabbles which retarded progress.

Professor Atsu Ayee, an Adjutant Professor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal of South Africa also asked members of the union to unite and contribute to the development of the town. He said with unity there was nothing that the people could not do improve their living conditions.

Mr Dotse Dadadzogbor, Chairman of the Union said the sea had destroyed most of their social infrastructure in the town and stressed the need to rebuild the community.

He named some of the facilities that had been washed away by the sea as schools, clinics and a post office. The Chairman of the Union said plans were far advanced to reconstruct the facilities.

Some of the activities planned for the celebration include fundraising, stakeholders meeting on education, health and tourism.
