“Kayayee” for Training

139 “Kayayee”, female porters, have registered with the Department of Social Welfare to be trained in various vocational skills to change their present status.

UNICEF is sponsoring the programme to enable the street girls to acquire skills in batik, tie and dye, soap and pomade making, weaving, hairdressing, sewing and home management.

Mrs Mary Amadu, Director at the Social Welfare Department told the GNA yesterday that 100 girls out of the total of 139 would begin the training in August because of limited resources. The training will be for six months to two years depending on the type of course.
