KATH receives urology instruments

Kumasi, Feb 10, GNA – The Mayo Clinic Department of Urology in Minnesota, USA, on Thursday donated urology instruments worth 250,000 dollars to the Urology Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

The instruments were procured through the initiative of Prof Joseph Segura, a renowned urologist and an inventor of urology instruments and Dr Joseph Akornor, a Ghanaian urologist at the Mayo Clinic.

The instruments included Ureterorenoscopes, Cystoscopes, Resectoscopies, Stents, Guide Wires, Glide Wires, Stone Baskets and accessories.

Presenting the instruments Dr Akornor said the donation was Prof Segura’s efforts to promote endourology and elevate urology in the hospital and the country as a whole.

He said some of the instruments were modern and invented by Prof Segura who is also a world authority in urology. Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, the Chief Executive Officer of KATH, thanked Prof Segura and Dr Akornor for the kind gesture. He said with the support from voluntary associations in Italy, KATH would soon establish a urology centre to train young doctors in modern urology.

Dr Nsiah-Asare appealed to Ghanaians living abroad to assist to improve health infrastructure in the country.
