KATH Neuro surgery unit to organise symposium on myelogram

Kumasi, May 24, GNA – The Neuro Surgery Unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital will, on May 27, organise a one-day symposium on Myelogram for health professionals in the country to enhance their capacity to diagnose and manage spinal cord related ailments. Myelogram is a medical investigation or procedure that enables health personnel to accurately detect and treat malformations in the spinal cord caused by accidents, tumours and others.

Dr D.A Beeko, Consultant Neuro-surgeon in-charge of the Neuro-Surgery Unit of KATH, told the GNA in an interview that the symposium, which forms part of the 50th anniversary celebration of KATH, was expected to impart special skills to participants to save people from unnecessary pain and avoidable paralysis.

He said injuries and diseases affecting the spinal cord could be fatal and debilitating if not accurately detected and rectified. Dr Beeko said the use of Myelogram technique since the Neuro-surgery unit of KATH was set up two years ago had helped some bedridden and wheelchair bound persons to regain their ability to walk.
