Kumasi, April 27, GNA- Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, Chief Executive of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), has hinted that, the Emergency and Accident Unit commissioned is set to operate on May 4, 2009. He said after several months of testing the equipment as well as user training for the personnel at the centre, it is ready to be opened to the public for only emergency cases.
Dr. Nsiah-Asare made these known in Kumasi at the weekend during a press briefing and tour of the facility.
He explained that, the centre, which would operate on a-24-hour basis, has facilities such as a laboratory, standby generator, improved water system, elevator and helipad at the top to enable helicopters to land. Others are Intensive Care Unit, a theatre, Casualty recovery ward, Disaster Management on the ground floor, Burns Unit with Therapy beds which has anti-biotic, will also prevent bed soars.
The facility also has a research centre to research on how to reduce mortality cases, minimising road accidents and others would be conducted.
The Chief Executive noted that, a training centre for nurses who will handle emergency cases is also part of the multi-purposed building, adding that, an accreditation would be granted by August 2009. He stressed that the training kits worth 40,000 Euros had been donated to the Centre by an Italian Company and doctors will be instructors.
The Emergency and Accident Centre will again treat traumatised patients as well as orthopaedics and work will start slowly till everything has been put in place, he stated. Dr. Nsiah-Asare emphasised that, the communication system at the centre has been done in such a way that, other health centres would not find it difficult to liaise with KATH before they send in their emergency cases.
There are in all, 106 beds, VVIP wards and a chapel cry for patients where those who are traumatised would meet with their religious leaders.
Concerning the maintenance, he explained that, the centre has a-six-year guarantee contract with the contractor, saying that, a strong management team had been put in place to ensure its daily cleaning.
