Kumasi, Dec. 17, GNA – The Kumasi Polytechnic admitted 1,847 fresh students for various courses out of 2,857 students who qualified for admission in the 2005/2006 academic year. Dr Benjamin Kwasi Prah, Principal of the Polytechnic, who announced this at the matriculation of fresh students in Kumasi on Saturday, cited the lack of resources and facilities as some of the problems facing the institution, which affected more students intake. He noted that the Polytechnic had expanded tremendously over the last few years in order to absorb students and that such rapid expansion called for sacrifice and personal comfort in general amenities. Dr Prah appealed to the fresh students to learn how to use those amenities without friction. He said the process of learning in tertiary institutions should contribute most significantly to the process of character building and moral training.
“A really good scholar will necessarily acquire intellectual honesty, integrity, respect for views other than his own, modesty, perseverance and all traits of character that go to make an educated men and the good man”, he added. The Principal said the business of the Polytechnic as a tertiary institution was to train the mind to be analytical to be able to look for and appreciate other options in solving life-long problems. Dr Prah, who later led the students to take the matriculation oath, asked them to lead disciplined and exemplary lives worthy of emulation as specified in the students’ handbook of the Polytechnic. He commended the new students for gaining admission into the Polytechnic and asked them to study harder in their various fields.
