June 4 Uprising still relevant – Nketia

Nsoatre (B/A), June 4, GNA – Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Friday asserted that the revolutionary process ignited on June 4, 1979 was still relevant.

He said it was, therefore, incumbent on members of the party to help ensure the realization of its cherished goals.

“Ghanaians were fed up with the corrupt practices and wanton injustices in the country at that time and it behooves on every member and supporter of the party to gird up their loins and help to eliminate the canker”, he said. Mr Asiedu Nketia was addressing members of the party and cadres of the revolution to commemorate the regional celebration of the June 4 uprising at Nsoatre in Sunyani West District.

He said the celebration of the day was significant because it connoted power to the people whose welfare politics was all about. “That is why we have departed from the old order of the day being celebrated only in Accra and now being in all the regions so that the people will realize that the uprising did not stem from one man’s ego but “a spontaneous resolve of the people to rid the country of what hampered their development and progress”.

Mr Yaw Buabeng Gyan, National Organiser of the NDC stressed that “until we exhibit probity and accountability and refrain from corrupt practices, June 4 will continue to be celebrated”.

He urged members of the party to unite and forge ahead as belonging to one NDC family poised to retain power in 2012. Present were Municipal, District Chief Executives and some party activists, who exhorted party members, supporters and sympathizers to work extra hard to enable the government to achieve the goals of the “Better Ghana Agenda”. 04 June 10
