Accra, Aug.2, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday called on the Judiciary within the Commonwealth to uphold human rights and be objective in dispensing justice.
He said the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association (CMJA) was a prototype of the global village within which members should share values of their judicial systems.
President Kufuor made the call when Executive Members of the CMJA attending a five-day Conference in Accra paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.
The Conference being organised by African Information Technology, Exhibition and Conference (AITEC) Ghana, is under the theme: “Judicial Reform-Impact, Driving Force and the Future.”
President Kufuor reiterated the Government’s commitment to uphold human rights and rule of law within a system where the Judiciary was independent of the Executive arm of Government.
“It is our hope that all delegates would feel at home, enjoy our hospitality and learn from the collective wisdom of the delegates”, he said.
The Right Honourable Lord David Hope of Craighead, President of CMJA, said the conference was a family occasion and an opportunity for their Ghanaian counterparts to improve on their performance.
“It is a learning process and we have learnt a great deal in Ghana,” he said.
