Some assembly members of the Obuasi municipal assembly have accused the judicial service of undermining their efforts at maintaining security and social justice in their communities as a result of less punitive measures meted out to criminal and offenders put before them. Two of the assembly members who spoke to ?The Servant? in an exclusive interview, on condition of anonymity all! eged that thieves and other criminal offenders caught red handed are mostly given less punitive sentences like minor fines or at times set free.
This development they noted, has encouraged several criminals in their communities to confidently go about their nefarious activity without fear, whiles the watchdog committees remain demoralized. One of the assembly members name (with held) accused the courts of unduly delaying and adjourning such trials and in the end, setting suspects free without any justifiable reasons.
Some of these criminals who are set free by the courts have threatened them with deaths yet no concrete actions have been taken by the police and the courts.
One of the assembly members said 8 of his 10 member watchdog committee members have resigned due to deaths threats on their lives by suspected armed robbers and thieves who have been set free by the courts for no obvious reasons.
