Judge threatens to release untried suspects

An Accra magistrate court judge has threatened to release on bail, all suspects who have spent three years or more in custody without trial.

Justice Ebenezer Kwaku Ansah told the court Tuesday that he is unhappy with the slow pace at which the attorney general’s department prosecutes cases.

According to Kasapa FM’s Daakyehene who was in court, the judge expressed frustration over the lackadaisical attitude of lawyers at the AG’s department with regards to trials.

He warned that if nothing is done to reverse the situation immediately, he will begin to grant bail to suspects who have spent some considerable amount of time in custody without proper trial.
