JSS to be closed down as a result of poor enrolment

Mfensi (Ash), Aug 01, GNA – The Atwima-Nwabiagya District Education Directorate has warned of the possible close down of the Mfensi Junior Secondary School (JSS) if enrolment was not increased and the residents did not desist from the persistent defecation in the classrooms.

Mr Richard Owusu-Agyemang, the District’s Community Participation Co-ordinator (CPC), said despite the government’s fee-free education policy, enrolment in the school continued to decrease. He was speaking at an Open Day of the local Methodist Primary School at Mfensi on Monday.

Mr Owusu-Agyemang said the tendency of some parents to withdraw their brilliant children to nearby public and private schools at the expense of the local basic school was undermining educational development in the area.

He said most of the residents have little value for education and this has led to persistent defecation in the classrooms and on school premises.

Mr Thomas Kwasi Okyere, a prominent citizen of the area who presided, gave the assurance that the community leaders would intensify enrolment drive and also participate actively in educational programmes. Twelve pupils who excelled in various academic disciplines were presented with awards and certificates.
