JSS pupil dies in accident

Accra, Feb. 18, GNA – A 14-year-old JSS 2 pupil died on Thursday in an accident on the Huni-Valley-Damang Road when a bus conveying children to school slipped into a ditch and landed on him.

A statement issued by Gold Fields in Accra on Friday said the cause of the accident was being investigated by the Police at Huni-Valley with the cooperation of Centre Link Transport Company, owners of the bus, and all other relevant parties.

The statement said information indicated that the accident occurred at about 0820 hours when a bus conveying about 50 children from Huni-Valley-Amoanda area to school at Damang developed a mechanical problem, while climbing a hill about two kilometers off the Damang-Huni-Valley Junction.

“When the driver realized that the vehicle could not climb the hill, he asked the children to disembark and return to Huni-Valley.

“While the children walked towards Huni-Valley, the driver made an attempt to climb the hill at the summit of which the bus reversed uncontrollably towards the direction of the children.”

The statement said a situation of panic ensued as the children began to run helter-skelter for safety.

“In the process, a 14 year-old JSS2 pupil of Damang JSS, Master Dacosta Yeboah who had taken shelter in a nearby bush was unlucky as the bus eventually landed on him.

“He was declared dead on arrival at the Huni-valley Clinic.” Goldfields extended its condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Master Yeboah.
