Accra, Oct. 1, GNA – Veteran journalist, George Marshall Naykene, would be laid to rest on Saturday, October 2, at the Awudome cemetery. He was a former Welfare Officer of the Ghana Journalists Association and founder of the Christian Chronicle and Sankofa Voice Newspapers. The late Mr. Naykene was a member of the Journalists Group 32 of the Amnesty International. He was instrumental in the formation of International P.E.N. Ghana, an association of poets, newspaper editors and novelists.
The late Naykene travelled extensively in Ghana and overseas. He worked with Ghanaian Times, Graphic, Anglican Voice and the Ilorin Guardian of Nigeria.
He is survived by five children and a grand daughter. Chief Justice launches Judicial Service website
Accra, Oct. 1, GNA – The Chief Justice, Mr Justice George Kingsley Acquah on Friday launched Judicial Service Website and e-mail facility that would enhance information flow between the courts and the public. The website address: www.judicial.gov.gh would allow people to access information about the court system and provide library facilities such as Acts and Decrees, Court fees, judgements and the Constitution.
Mr Justice Acquah said “litigants can now access information on the internet without necessarily travelling from afar to the courts.” For the first time, the CJ also launched the services annual report depicting the performances of various courts among other things. The two launches coincided with the meeting of Magistrates and Judges and Staff of the Judicial Service in Accra
The CJ said the public could also lodge complaints, make enquiries and comment electronically by mailing to the complaints@judicial.gov.gh. He asked the public to provide valid names, post and e-mail addresses to enable them contact them on issues raised. The CJ announced that criminal session of the High Court would run through out the year and asked Registrars of the High Courts to compile lists of Jurors to enable them commence work. He told the staff that under the provisions of the new High Court Civil Procedure Rules currently before Parliament, he was empowered to direct the hearing of any case on any day including Sundays and Public Holidays and days within the legal vacation.
“We have checked on the provision of the Public holidays law and have satisfied ourselves that the power does not violate that law. The procedural rules of the other courts are to be amended to have such provision. “Such a provision is necessary to counteract the ever-increasing criticism that the courts work less than half of the year as a result of the numerous public holidays and the three legal vacations,” he said. Mr Justice Acquah said six additional automated court units were about to be completed.
