Germany-Ghana defender Joshua Quarshie has joined Austrian Bundesliga club Sturm Graz from Southampton on loan, completing a move that takes the 22-year-old centre-back away from England’s Championship.
Quarshie’s loan began on 27 August 2026 and is scheduled to run until 30 June 2027. No transfer fee has been disclosed for the temporary move. The defender’s arrival gives Sturm Graz a 1.96m option in central defence as they prepare for their Bundesliga campaign.
The Duisburg-born player joined Southampton from Hoffenheim on a permanent transfer on 1 July 2025 for €3.5m. He moved to the English club after spending the second half of the 2024-25 season on loan at Greuther Furth, having returned to Hoffenheim at the end of that spell.
Before his move to Southampton, Quarshie had also spent the first half of 2024-25 on loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf. That followed his progression through Hoffenheim’s system, where he moved from the club’s second team into the senior squad in August 2023.
Quarshie began his youth career in Germany with Schalke 04 and later developed at Fortuna Dusseldorf, Rot-Weiss Essen and Hoffenheim. His move to Sturm Graz represents a return to continental football after his season with Southampton.
The centre-back is listed as capable of using either foot, a detail that adds to the flexibility available to his new side in defence. His market value is recorded at €4m, following a rise from €3m when he joined Southampton.
The transfer comes after Quarshie made no appearances in Southampton’s opening two possible matches of the 2026-27 campaign, with no minutes recorded in either the Championship or the EFL Cup. He now moves to Austria with Sturm Graz, whose league is identified as the Bundesliga.
Quarshie previously joined Hoffenheim from Fortuna Dusseldorf on loan in January 2024 and returned to the German club at the end of that season. He then spent another temporary spell with Greuther Furth before completing his permanent move to Southampton.
The 22-year-old’s career has therefore included development in Germany, a permanent move to England and now a loan switch to Austria. Joshua Quarshie has completed his move from Southampton to Sturm Graz until 30 June 2027.
