Jobless nurses demonstrate

The Coalition of Unemployed Nurses, Midwives, and Psychiatric Nurses on Wednesday, April 27 hit the streets of Accra in red bands to demonstrate and petition President John Mahama, for the failure of the Ghana Health Service to employ them since completing national service in August 2015.

The group, in a letter addressed to the Office of the President and co-signed by its president Adam Masahudu and Secretary Dordaa Isaac, said the coalition was made up of 2,241 bonded registered nurses, registered midwives, and registered psychiatric nurses, who graduated from public nurses’ training colleges in March 2014 and completed national service in August 2015, but have since not been posted as demanded by the bond.

The health workers in an earlier statement accused the government of deliberately stalling their recruitment in order to use what would have been their salaries for political campaigns ahead of the November polls.

The group’s demands are as follows:

1. An immediate financial clearance be released indicating the name, year of completion, and school of completion.

2. That all members must be given financial clearance and list be pasted at all regional health directorates for immediate recruitment.

3. Immediate posting of all members to their various facilities in May 2016 without any delay.

4. Back-dating our appointment letters to September, 2015 and paying us same for the time lost.
