Feeling the heat of the daily bashing from Ghanaians arising from current economic hardship, President John DramaniMahama could not hide his admiration for former President Kufuor and other political leaders he described as “wise Ghanaian politicians” for demonstrating unconditional loyalty to the state and rallying to the defense of the motherland.
Without mentioning them by name, the president, overwhelmed by the rare show of support from some senior political leaders across the divide, who have since the beginning of the economic difficulties confronting the nation been proffering suggestions, advice and encouragement; thanked them for standing behind government in these times of hardship.
President Mahama on Monday February 10, 2014, took to his facebook and wrote on his wall that these senior political leaders, he described as “wise Ghanaian politicians” despite the current economic standing of the country appreciate the fact that the best way to go is to assist government.
Obviously elated, President Mahama was encouraged by recent admonishing of former President John Kufuorthat Ghanaians should avoid unnecessarily censuring but to effectively use their brainpower to assist the governments to move the nation forward remarked.
“I thank and salute the wise Ghanaian politicians who understand that the right attitude in such times is to assist the government and stop predicting disasters.”
Enjoying same solidarity from senior political figures including DrPaaKwesiNduom of the PPP, Dr Abu Sakara, CPP flag bearer in the last election; GCPP’s Dr Henry Lartey and the only independent presidential candidate, Jacob OseiYeboah, the President, unable to hide his appreciation of the gestures stated:
“It is your government. And it does everything necessary to lead our country and to attain the development goals it has announced. A nation has to be united when facing any kind of political or economic challenges,”
He added “Because, in a democratic country such as ours, the government is the people’s government.”
Ghanaians are currently experiencing economic difficulties, partly due to the fast depreciation of the local currency, the cedi, which has been depreciating against major international currencies out of which the Bank of Ghana has introduced stringent measures to arrest the situation.
Sharing his views on the situation on his facebook wall, the 2012 Presidential candidate of the Progressive Peoples Party, DrPaaKwesiNduom, also urged government, relevant stakeholders and the general public to “reject instant, feel-good solutions” while finding ways to strengthen the economy.
The leader of the Great Consolidated Popular Party, Dr Henry Lartey, on the other hand called for a paradigm shift in the economic policy being pursued by government, saying challenges in the economy are as a result of successive government’s pursuance of policies which did not have long term benefits for the country.
