The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, says he would not hesitate to put Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings before court if there is evidence that he committed crimes against the state in his long reign as Chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council and President of the Republic of Ghana in the regime of the National Democratic Congress.
In an interview with Kwaku Sakyi Addo in GTV’s flagship programme Kwaku-One-On-One, to be telecast on Sunday, Nana Addo would emphasize that no one is above the law.
The Attorney-General would not specify offences under which the ex-President could be tried but there are a number of Ghanaians who be number of Ghanaians who believe the abduction and murder of judges in June 1982, would not really be put to rest unless the ex-Chairman has been grilled in a court of law.
Many are those who indict the ex-Chairman for various degrees of human rights abuses including ex-judicial murders and disappearances of people perceived as opponents of his military regime in the two military juntas he led.
There is contention too that the former President would have to be dragged to court to throw more light on circumstances leading to the state guaranteeing $20 for Mrs Woodard Renee Cotton, the African American at the Centre of the Quality Grain scandal. A number of the ex-President’s Cabinet Ministers are currently on trial at the Fast Track Court in Accra, charged with causing financial loss to the state.
A school of thought holds that ex-President Jerry John Rawlings would have to answer for the circumstances leading to the acquisition of the controversial Presidential Jet which is still sitting at the tarmac at the Air Force Base in Accra.
In its issue of September 21-27, Weekend Agenda alleged in a news story that the NDC government headed by Flt Lt Rawlings bought the Jet from TransAir Trade SA, a Swiss Company based in Geneva, sold it to Gallen and leased it from Gallen with HSBC Investment Bank PLC acting as the brokers.
There are a number of Ghanaians who allege that the transaction was made to go through because of the interest of the ex-President.
