Jasikan, June 28, GNA – The Jasikan Assembly has privatised four markets to boost its internally generated revenue to curb over-reliance on the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
Asuka Breakthrough Enterprise (ABE), Mismanuel Works Limited, Human Need Foundation and Emmanuel Enterprise have won bids to collect revenue at the Tpa-Abotoase, Kwamekrom, Kute and New Ayoma markets. Mr Solomon Kwame Donkor, the Jasikan District Chief Executive who said this at its Executive Committee meeting at Jasikan on Tuesday, said each firm was given a revenue target to attain.
He said the privatisation of the markets was
necessitated by the low revenue position by the assembly’s
agents. Mr Donkor, who personally led a task force on a
verification exercise on a market day at Abotoase, said three
million cedis was realized contrary to the between 300,000 and 800,000 cedis collected by the agents. The DCE said it was noticed that the assembly’s
agents often demanded fish, maize and cassava dough to
allow the market women to ply their trade and others
engaged in evening market just to outwit revenue collectors. Mr Donkor described the practice as unhealthy
and tantamount to nation wrecking. Under the Community-Based Rural Development
Project, he said a six-unit classroom block with an office,
store and library would be built for the E. P. Junior Secondary
School and a slaughterhouse built at Jasikan.
