Accra, Feb. 16, GNA – The Japanese Government on Wednesday expressed concern over the situation in Togo following the death of President Gnassingbe Eyadema.
A statement issued by the Embassy in Ghana said the Japan respects the efforts being made by the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for constitutional legality to be followed in Togo where the late President Eyadema’s son, Gnassingbe, was installed President in disregard for the Constitution.
It said Japan hoped that such efforts would lead to an early and peaceful settlement in compliance with the will of the people in Togo. President Eyadema died on February 5, 2005 at 69 as Africa’s longest serving ruler.
