The Japanese Government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA, has donated emergency relief items valued at 8.5 million yen (Approx. GHC300,000) to the Ministry of the Interior to assist victims of the June 3 flood in Accra.
The items include sleeping pads, blankets, generating sets and plastic sheets.
As of June 11, 160 people had died and about 53,000 people affected by the floods, according to the Government.
The Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Kaoru Yoshimura, expressed condolence for the lives lost to the disaster and re-affirmed Japan’s commitment to assisting Ghana in this time of need.
Receiving the donation, Mr Mark Woyongo, Minister of the Interior, thanked the Japanese Government for the timely intervention and promised to distribute the items to affected victims through NADMO.
Japan is committed to assisting Ghana achieve its developmental goals and JICA’s diverse projects in Health, Education, Infrastructural development, Tourism, Governance, Volunteerism and many others, which are positioned toward Ghana’s overall socio-economic and political growth and development.
