Accra, Jan. 8, GNA – President John Agyekum Kufuor on Thursday said the relationship being established between Ghana and the Columbia University was to help translate ideas into practical achievements for Ghana.
He said he was optimistic that the relationship would help hasten Ghana’s determination to become a model for Sub-Saharan Africa. President Kufuor made the observation when Mr Lee C. Bollinger, President of Columbia University on a week visit to Ghana, paid a courtesy call on him at the Castle, Osu.
Mr Bollinger’s visit is to explore ways to enhance collaborative efforts already under way in the country following on the heels of President Kufuor’s visit to the University in September last year during the United Nations General Assembly.
President Kufuor said the model country being envisaged was that with good democratic governance in Africa.
Mr Bollinger said Columbia University working with the United Nations and other international organisations, had long-standing research and service programs in Ghana.
“Many distinguished Columbia faculties have worked, and have plans for working, closely with Ghanaians on critical issues of global concern, from improving healthcare delivery to environmental conservation and economic development alternatives”, he said.
