As part of activities marking this year’s Ramadan festivities, the Islamic Library for Reading and Recording, a Muslim-based non-governmental organisation, has presented assorted items valued at several hundreds of Ghana cedis to inmates of both the Central and Manhyia prisons in Kumasi.
The society presented second-hand clothes, food items, and a cash sum of GH¢200 mobilised through contributions from the public to the inmates at both prisons last Saturday.
The presentation, which is done annually to commemorate the end of the Ramadan period, also forms part of the society’s social responsibility towards the well-being of inmates of the two prisons.
Presenting the items at separate ceremonies, the Director of the society, Sheikh Nuhu Abubakar Siddick, said the gesture was the society’s small contribution towards the rehabilitation of the inmates, and to make them feel a part of society.
Sheikh Nuhu denounced what he said was the stigma and victimisation of prison inmates, and stressed the need for people in society to offer support for them, in order to enable them integrate into society once they are released.
He said the period of festivities like the Ramadan was an ideal occasion for Ghanaians, and particularly, Muslims, to reflect on the conditions of the inmates, and also pray for their welfare.
He, therefore, advised Muslims not to see the end of the Ramadan month as the end to virtues and good deeds, stressing that they must continue to live in peace and harmony, and avoid negative tendencies that paint negative images of the religion.
An officer on duty at the Central Prisons, ASP Emmanuel Amegbor, commended the society for the gesture, and promised that the items would be given to the inmates as expected.
