Ho, May 20, GNA – The Volta Region could soon be home to an integrated rabbit industry capable of supplying processed rabbit meat to local and foreign markets.
Togbe Afede XIV, the President of the National House of Chiefs, said this at a general meeting of the House on Thursday.
When fully established the investment would support about 3,000 out-growers to breed rabbits for sale to the company using parent stocks from France.
Togbe Afede said the prospective investor was in the region looking for about 10,000 hectares of land close to abundant source of water supply. He therefore urged Chiefs in the region to seize the opportunity which promises to be beneficial to the region’s economy and people.
Togbe Afede said Chiefs were expected to be initiators and facilitators of development and other activities that could improve the socio-economic situation of their people.
The United States Department of Agriculture rated meat from rabbit as the most nutritious known to man and the highest in protein. It is also said to be lower in percentage fat than chicken, turkey, beef and pork.
Rabbit meat is also passed as suitable for special diets such as those for heart disease patients, diets for the aged, low sodium diets and weight reduction diets.
