Gomoa Brofo, (C/R) Nov 21, GNA – The Regent of Gomoa Brofo near Apam, Nana Akyen, has advised parents to stop buying clothes for funerals and invest the money in the education of their children.
Nana Akyen said seeking a better future for children must supersede acquisition of clothes and other earthly things.
The Regent was speaking at the Corpus Christi Celebration of the Apam St Joseph’s Parish of the Catholic Church, at Gomoa Brofo on Sunday.
Catholics from 38 stations under the parish participated in the Corpus Christi- an annual festival of the Church during which Christ is projected as King of Kings.
Nana Akyen deplored the falling standard of education in the Gomoa East and West Districts and blamed it on the misplacement of parents’ priorities.
“Whilst children cannot get the basic necessities for schooling, such as pens and exercise books, their parents will spend money on clothes for the funeral of a relative when the need arises,” he said.
The Regent noted that some of the parents, especially mothers, were faced with the problems of where to keep the piles of clothing acquired because their boxes and bags were full to capacity.
He urged parents to stop blaming teachers for poor the performance of children in examination because children spent more time with their parents than teachers.
In a sermon which preceded the festival, the Reverend Father Jude Eduafo Ampah, the Parish Priest, called on Christians to be their brothers’ keepers.
He said it is on that principle that Christianity revolved and it would be on that principle that Christians would be judged at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.
“When I was hungry, you fed me, when I was thirsty you gave me water to drink, when I was sick you paid me a visit and when I was in prison you came to console me,” the Priest quoted from the bible.
He said when we do these things we are show concern for our brothers and sisters.
