Gomoa Ankamu (C/R), Jan 15, GNA – Sheikh Huseini Kassim, Chief Imam for the Gomoa District, has appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to introduce Arabic and Islamic studies into the curriculum of Teacher Training Colleges to produce teachers for Islamic schools. Sheikh Kassim said the acute shortage of Arabic teachers in the country was having a negative impact on Islamic education, since religious and secular education, were equally needed for the growth of the society.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency(GNA) at Gomoa Ankamu near Apam in the Central Region, he urged Muslim parents to inculcate Islamic tenets into the youth to make them understand what the religion stood for from an early age.
The Chief Imam called on the leaders of the religion to encourage the formation of credit unions in Muslim Communities to generate funds to support the members especially in times of need.
“The time has come for us to harness resources to support each other instead of roaming the corridors of district assemblies for the scanty poverty alleviation fund” he stated.
Sheikh Kassim called on Ghanaians to change their attitude to work and contribute to make 2006 a year of action and progress. He also appealed to the authorities to make inputs available for workers to be productive.
The Chief Imam urged politicians to tolerate the views of their opponents and called on the media to be circumspect in their reportage if the peace of the country was not to disturbed.
