Standard Chartered Bank is to provide twenty five million cedi for an Internet training and access programme for ten schools in Yendi and Tamale.
Mr. Willing Vanderpuije, Head of External Affairs, Standard Chartered Bank, will announce the sponsorship at a Prize Giving event of the SDA Primary School in Yendi on the Wednesday February 21st, 2001.
The Internet training and access, which is being provided at the Centre for Information Technologies, Research and Development (CITRED) in Tamale, was offered to a number of schools under the On the Line – Schools Linking Programme in Ghana which is being implemented by the British Council.
On the Line was established to celebrate the new Millennium by linking the eight countries on the Meridian line to improve north-south relationships and bring greater understanding of each others culture and ways of living.
The OTL School Linking Programme has linked 160 schools in Ghana with schools in the UK. Forty five of the Ghanaian schools have received Internet training and six months Internet access.
The On the Line Project officially comes to an end on Feb 28, 2001 and Internet access will also cease.
Due to the Stanchart sponsorship however the following ten schools will continue to enjoy their Internet links: SDA Primary school, Abatey JSS, Islamic No 2 JSS, Balogu Primary- Yendi. St. Monica’s JSS, Presby Experimental, Tolon L/A Primary, Kumbungu L/A JSS, Dahin-sheli, Tishugu Ang. JSS-TAMALE.
