Inter-town fares remain same while taxi fares go up in Ho

Ho, Feb 18, GNA-Inter town transport fares being charged by members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union remained the same at the Ho main transport terminus despite the increase in fuel prices announced on Friday.

However, taxi drivers operating in the municipality had raised fares.

They now charge 2,000 cedis for distances that attracted 1,700.00 cedis and 2,500 cedis for distances that attracted 2,200 cedis before the price increases were announced.

Mr Kudzo Nyator, Advisor to the Regional Office of the GPRTU told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Saturday that drivers operating under the GPRTU were bound by a directive from General-Secretary of the Union to charge the old fares until a decision was taken on new fares on Monday. He said drivers at a meeting expressed misgivings about the order but were complying.

Mr Esem Adraku, Chairman of the Ho Taxi Drivers Branch 3, expressed disappointment at the arbitrary increase in fares by taxi drivers in Ho and demanded that passengers reported such drivers, stating the registration numbers of the vehicles to the GPRTU office in Ho for immediate action.

Passengers interviewed said the drivers were charging new and unapproved fares for passengers who did not join the vehicles at approved terminuses or in-between the stations along the routes.
