Intended tariff adjustment will be fair to Ghanaians – VRA

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has stated that contrary to wide spread speculation, the suggested upward adjustment of electricity tariffs will in no way be unfair to Ghanaians.

Media reports have speculated that with the current financial crisis being experienced by the VRA, the utility provider is pushing for an immediate upward adjustment of tariffs to improve its finances.

The revelation comes days after an increase in petroleum prices saw sectors such transport, industry, agriculture and services being negatively affected by shortages.

Severe power cuts have led the imposition of a load shedding regime in Ghana.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, the Public Relations Officer of the VRA, Sam Fletcher stated that his outfit deserved the revenue which will be derived from the increased tariffs because the company was not reaping the necessary benefits of its production and supply of energy to the Ghanaians.

“If you are talking about fairness here, do you think it is fair for me to produce a commodity, a product at the cost of 200 cedis to go to the market and sell it only to come home with 100 cedis? Do you think it is fair?

I produce a product but I cannot breakeven but you expect me to give you the quality of service you are looking for. How do I give this to you? I don’t have the money to do that.”

Mr. Fletcher gave the assurance that his outfit was working to ensure quality services were provided to ensure the increment will be complimented by improved services.

“I am sure the service should get better and that is what we are working on as the power utilities.”
