Information Minister Visits Sunnyfm.

Information Minister, Mrs. Sabah Zita Okaikoi has paid a working visit to the offices of SunnyFM; an Accra based private radio station which was gutted by fire last week Thursday.

The unfortunate incident lead to the death of an internship student who according to management made efforts in switching of a meter but got suffocated by the thick smoke.

Accompanied by one of her Deputies, Mr. Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, the Minister expressed government’s condolence to the management and staff of the station and assured them of any necessary assistance.

The Minister reiterated government’s commitment in ensuring that the media operates in a free and independent environment but pleaded with them to be objective and development oriented in their reportage.

She indicated that the approval of the final draft of the Freedom of Information Bill by cabinet was a manifestation of the government’s commitment towards the process of ensuring that the media can get access to credible information from state institutions.

The General Manager of the station, Mr. Stephen Eshun, on behalf of management and staff expressed their appreciation to the Minister and her Deputy for their visit and pledged their commitment to ensure that they contribute to the economic development of the nation.

Mr. Eshun attributed the cause of the fire to power fluctuation and indicated that although they called for the fire service efforts to use the available fire extinguisher proved futile until the fire service came in to put the fire off.
