Akropong-Akwapim (Eastern Region), 15 Oct The youth charity group of the Indian community in Accra has built a classroom for the Akropong School for the Blind. The classroom, estimated at seven million cedis, is the first to be completed out of a 10-classroomed block being financed by the group, World Vision International and some benevolent organisations. Mrs. Sunita Moolchandani, leader of the group who handed over the classroom to the Akwapim North District Chief Executive, Mr. Anthony Gyampo, at a ceremony at Akropong-Akwapim yesterday, said the gesture was in response to an appeal by the school authorities. She assured the school of further assistance to help solve some of its problems. Commissioning the project, Mr. Gyampoh who commended the group for their ”invaluable gesture” said it would cement the close relationship between Ghana and India. He announced that the district assembly was undertaking the fencing of the school at a cost of 45 million cedis out of which about 20 million cedis has already been spent. He appealed to other benevolent societies, non-governmental organisations and individuals to supplement government’s efforts in providing quality education for the disabled. The headmaster of the school, Mr. Macbeth Moamere, said due to the increase in enrolment in recent years, some classes have up to 30 pupils instead of the approved ten per class and appealed for the early completion of the ten-classroomed block.
