Increase abortions among students in Volta

Keta, July 1, GNA – Dr. Geoffrey Nyamuame, Medical Superintendent of the Volta Regional Hospital in Ho, has expressed concern about increasing cases of pregnancy and abortion related complications among students in the region.

He said some female students lost their lives while others had their reproductive system permanently destroyed through the complications.

Dr. Nyamuame, who was speaking at the 56 Awards Day of the Keta Senior High School, advised students against practices that could affect their development. The medical Superintendent, who is a past student of the school, expressed worry that records from the Psychiatric Hospitals in the country indicate that persons below 18 years in the country were developing serious mental problems because of the use of drugs. He commended staff and students of the school for the academic successes chalked and appealed to parents to support teachers to discipline school children. Professor Atsu Ayee, Dean of the Faculty of Social Studies, University of Ghana, and president of the Old Students Association, appealed to various year groups of the school to donate cash and materials towards the building of the Jubilee Complex before the school’s 60th anniversary that would fall in 2013. Mr. Dzidzeme Sedanu-Kwawu, Headmaster, said the school that with a population of 1,689 students, had achieved enviable successes in academic and non-academic fields.

He said the Parents Teacher Association of the school had started building a 240-bed capacity hostel estimated to cost 150,000 Ghana cedis in addition to its readiness to support 60,000 Ghana cedis biogas project.
